Exmoor National Park Authority are seeking additional support for our Ranger team to help with the high levels of visitors expected over the 2021 season as the UK comes out of lockdown.

We’re currently looking for a Seasonal Assistant Ranger to join our Access and Recreation Team on a 6 month fixed-term seasonal contract.


The postholder will be required to work 3 weekends in every 4 to help us cover busy periods.

The Role:


As a Seasonal Assistant Ranger, you will ensure that everyone feels welcome to the National Park and you will help people to both enjoy and understand the special qualities of Exmoor.


Assisting our Ranger Team to manage access and recreation, you will work with our community and land managers to help conserve and enhance Exmoor National Park.


You will provide a uniformed, friendly and helpful presence, ensuring that any negative impacts people can have are kept to a minimum, for the benefit of all who work in, visit and love Exmoor.

Speaking with visitors to explain codes of good practice and restrictions as necessary, you will also carry out site checks, clear litter etc.


Depending upon capacity and visitor pressures, you will also help us:


- Organise and carry out minor repairs

- Lead on inspections of our public paths and access network and record information in a variety of formats, making use of images, video, GIS and specialist equipment

- Support education activities and programmes, working closely with our Education Team

- Contribute to our walks, events and activities programme


About You


To join us as a Seasonal Assistant Ranger, you’ll need:


- A qualification in an environmental or countryside management discipline at HND (ideally degree) or equivalent level

- Good interpersonal skills

- Good practical skills and an ability to access rough and uneven ground

- Experience in land management, recreation and education/interpretation

- An ability to understand and work with technical documents and information

- Knowledge and experience of Health and Safety legislation and its application, including carrying out risk assessments

- To be competent in the use of IT systems, particularly Microsoft Office software and GIS

- An understanding of Exmoor and the aims and purposes of the National Park Authority

- A valid, full driving licence


Experience and knowledge of access and/or rights of way management and legislation would be beneficial to your application. Experience of working with local communities, young people, volunteers and under-represented groups would also be advantageous.
