Job Title:
Hyperbaric Centre Manager Normal place of work: Hyperbaric Medicine Facility, Scholl Building, Peel Road, Douglas, Isle of Man.
Hours of work: 37 per week (as required)
Salary: MPTC Band 7 Points 1-9
Accountable to: Medical Director and Directors of HBOT IOM Ltd
Accountable for: Management of all hyperbaric engineering systems and facilities.
Manages: Administrator, Chamber Supervisors and Operators and Diver Medic Technician. Volunteers.
Job requirements: Demonstrable successful management track record.
Qualified Diver Medic Technician and chamber operator. Experienced health and safety manager.
Qualified to act as responsible person for the purposes of registration.
Hyperbaric Centre Manager: Desirable Qualifications:
European Certified Hyperbaric Chamber Operator (ECHCO), Certified Hyperbaric Technologist (CHT), or equivalent. Certified (or working towards) European Certified Hyperbaric Safety Manager (ECHSM). Member of (or working towards) the Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH). Qualified in medical gas pipeline systems (MGPS)
Desirable Experience Off-shore saturation diving (LST) or at least acting as inshore supervisor. Royal Navy clearance diver supervisor or Royal Engineer supervisor of diving would be beneficial.
Hyperbaric Centre Manager - Role Summary The Hyperbaric Centre Manager (HCM) is responsible for the development and delivery of all non-clinical services for HBOT IOM Ltd in a safe and effective manner. This is a multi-faceted role and also incorporates the roles of Safety Manager, Technician and Operator as specified in ECHM European Code of Good Practice for Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy 2022. The HCM will provide specialist leadership and direction in respect of all Health and Safety and Quality Control matters relating to HBOT IOM Ltd, including legislation and good practice specific to hyperbaric medicine, diving, technical, engineering including MGPS and employment/staffing matters.
Specific elements of the role include:
- Ensuring all Hyperbaric Chamber Operations are compliant at all times with legislative and regulatory requirements and standards of good practice.
- Oversight of an effective communication interface between all managed staff, Medical Director and Administrator and provision of monthly (or as requested) management reports to the Board of Directors.
- In conjunction with the Medical Director and Administrator, prepare the annual budget for the facility for the approval of the Board of Directors.
- The ongoing development and promotion of a Health and Safety culture across the charity through the provision and development of health and safety policies and procedures, including risk assessment, accident prevention, health initiatives and acknowledged personal responsibility.
- Maintenance and management of occupational health, safety and well-being through systems, audit/inspection, and the establishment of high standards of safety awareness, behaviours and general performance.
Specific Areas of Responsibility
Management of hyperbaric facilities:
- To manage the maintenance of the Scholl Building, the hyperbaric chamber and associated equipment.
- To develop the HBOT IOM Ltd hyperbaric chamber facilities, systems and engineering capacity in line with the developing research and service aspects of the Charity.
- Communicate with staff in order to educate and inform the team about the status of the chamber system and engineering aspects of the work of HBOT IOM Ltd.
- To provide overall management of the chamber team and remain competent as a Chamber Supervisor, Operator and Attendant.
- To manage engineering and operational support to the activities undertaken by HBOT IOM Ltd.
Management of engineering services and activities:
- To ensure all engineering functions and practices are effective, efficient and compliant with legal and good practice requirements.
- To develop and maintain comprehensive risk assessments of engineering services and equipment and ensure that risk is minimised to be as low as reasonably practicable.
- To invoke changes to engineering practice and equipment in response to untoward incidents.
- To provide direction and advice to the Board of Directors of HBOT IOM Ltd.
- To ensure maintenance and safe operation of engineering components associated with the hyperbaric chamber equipment and other non-clinical equipment and ensure that maintenance and improvements are carried out whilst minimising downtime.
Quality Management:
To be accountable for the evaluation and, where appropriate, implementation and maintenance of quality management systems pertaining to the hyperbaric chamber operations (excluding medical services).
To identify opportunities and needs for new quality activities, targets and standards and manage their introduction and ongoing implementation.
Personal Approach:
The Hyperbaric Centre Manager is required to:
Lead a small team by example and as such must have the highest personal standards.
Work closely with all colleagues to promulgate the ethos and philosophy of HBOT IOM Ltd and to ensure delivery of operational plans and financial targets.

Recognise, adhere to and practice the decisions and agreements of the Board of Directors in all dealings with staff and in the discharge of the responsibilities of the role.
As the primary source of expert advice on the work of the facility it is expected that the postholder will undertake various public speaking events with a view to educating the public on the benefits of hyperbaric medicine and the work of the charity.
Strategic and operational direction and activities:
Engage as necessary with all employees to ensure full, collaborative, and effective delivery of operations.
In association with the Administrator assure the provision of a continuous on call system for all chamber staff.
Develop, update and manage arrangements for securing continued provision of services and utilities (water, electric etc.) in the event of external emergencies such as flooding.
In association with the Medical Director, oversee the operation and development of the hyperbaric facility provided by HBOT IOM Ltd.
Prepare the annual budget for all services provided by HBOT IOM Ltd in collaboration with the Administrator and Medical Director for the approval of the Board of Directors.
Prepare for inspections by registration bodies and implement their recommendations, and take into account responses from any consultation with external parties.
Training and Certification:
Develop and commission/deliver staff training courses and programmes as appropriate.
Develop and ensure the delivery of induction for all staff, customised in respect of their specific roles and needs to understand the process, practice and procedures relating to hyperbaric medicine.
Delivery of specialist training as appropriate.
Develop and implement site specific training and oversee the ongoing mandatory monthly training regime.
To oversee the Fitness to Work certification of staff.
Legal and statutory responsibilities for Health and Safety:
The Hyperbaric Centre Manager is accountable for all health and safety, quality and risk management and for the provision of expert advice in respect of these matters to the Board of Directors.
This includes:
Acting as the Responsible Person for the purposes of registration and for ensuring continuing compliance with the registration requirements and the safe operation of the facility.
The provision of advice on safety issues associated with all HBOT IOM Ltd operations to staff, patients, customers, contractors and general public.
The development, implementation and updating of the health and safety management system and the associated policies and procedures, and to continuously ensure that all staff and operations conform with this system and undertake their several and individual responsibilities, including those related to risk management processes.
The provision of training for staff required by the health and safety management system.
Establishing operational and emergency procedures and internal guidelines for safety.
Establishing and monitoring the maintenance program for the hyperbaric system.
Establishing an incident/accident reporting system and monitoring system of operational procedures.
Establishing a system for regular re-evaluation of the safety management system (including internal audits, reports).
Ensuring each member of staff is aware of their personal and, where appropriate managerial responsibilities for health and safety.
