Medical Director
Normal place of work: Scholl Building, Peel Road, Douglas, Isle of Man
Hours of work: 20 hours (on call as required)
Salary: tba pro rata
Accountable to: Directors of HBOT IOM Ltd
Accountable for: Clinical governance, direction and development of clinical activities of the facility.
Manages: On-call doctors and nurses.
Essential
Qualifications: MBBS or equivalent leading to full registration with a licence to practice with the GMC in the GP or Specialist register or equivalent.
Necessary certification and experience in Hyperbaric Medicine consistent with BHA Guidance.
DMAC 2 is essential. See Note 1.

Experience Five years postgraduate clinical experience
CCST in a relevant specialty, preferably Anaesthesia, Intensive Care Medicine or Acute Medicine or other medical specialities with sufficient exposure to Acute Medicine.
Recognition and experience in the field of Hyperbaric Medicine
Medical Director - Role Summary:
Responsible for clinical governance and direction and development of clinical activities of the facility including new and emerging indications for HBOT IOM Ltd.
Production and review of clinical assessment and treatment protocols in conjunction with the team. Responsibility for patient s safety within the unit.
Specific elements of the role include:
Prescription and clinical supervision of hyperbaric treatments, discharge or onward referral of patients after treatment and provision of clinical advice to patients and significant others.
Undertake assessments of patients before and after treatment.
Overview and maintenance of records.
Medical Director - Main Responsibilities:
- Provide and ensure a high standard pf patient care and patient safety within the unit.
- Ensure that patient records are kept in line with good medical practice principles and duties, insuring safe custody and confidentiality of clinical records.
- Monitor compliance with appropriate Health and Safety guidelines and regulations.
- Organise and participate in contribution to teaching /training and research activities.
- To assist management in reviewing Manx Care specifications and data collection (when necessary).
- Supervision of any Medical staff awaiting credentials for autonomous practice.
- To monitor staff skills for In-chamber Hyperbaric treatments.
- To participate in the elective treatments and on call rotas, which requires responding to calls when on call within 10 minutes and be available at the facility within 60 minutes if required.
- To assist in the management of the doctor s rota for the facility
- To participate in conversations around patient treatment plans and support their peers
- To liaise with Hyperbaric Manager and HBOT IOM Ltd management, concerning staffing levels.
- To ensure that standard operating and emergency procedures (SOP s and EP s) are followed and to review any breaches.
- To take part in the revision of SOP s and EP s and encourage participation of other healthcare professionals within the team to do so
- To be aware of changes in practice in the Hyperbaric Facility and cascade as appropriate.
- To maintain skills in advanced cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
- To be aware of budgetary constraints and to contribute to annual budget process.
- To facilitate and contribute to any research projects, clinical trials and evaluation of equipment, together with other Hyperbaric facility staff.
Personal Approach:
The Medical Director is required to:
Work closely with all colleagues to promulgate the ethos and philosophy of HBOT IOM Ltd and to ensure delivery of operational plans and financial targets.

All issues which do or may impact on the good standing of the Charity
Risks and opportunities for the Charity
Intelligence gained from contacts
Any operational matters, which present an actual or potential risk to the Charity.
Work collaboratively with other members of the team to implement and follow all decisions or actions agreed by the Board of Directors.
Adhere to the policies, procedures and standards of HBOT IOM Ltd.
Recognise, adhere to and practise the decisions and agreements of the Board of Directors in all dealings with staff and in the discharge of the responsibilities of the role.
Additional Notes:
The above is not an exhaustive list of duties and the post holder may be expected to perform different tasks as necessitated by their changing role within the organisation and the overall business objectives of the Charity. Wherever possible these changes will be made in consultation with the post holder.
The postholder is also expected to take proactive responsibility for their continuing development and training, to support the ongoing development of HBOT IOM Ltd and the development and maintenance of clinical and managerial competences to ensure effective delivery of their role.
NOTES:
1. A doctor applying for this post would be encouraged to achieve the Level 2d certification (or equivalent) within a 12-month period and until then the BHA guidelines apply.
British Hyperbaric Association Guidelines for the appointment of a Medical Director: The Medical Director should be a registered Medical Practitioner; a postgraduate qualification in a relevant speciality is an advantage. They should have practical experience and be competent in all medical aspects of therapeutic Hyperbaric facility activities. Their competence will be consistent with the types of patients accepted for treatment by the facility in which they work.
2. Others who may also apply: Associate Specialist or Trust Grade doctors with the relevant experience working at Consultant level in Anaesthesia and Critical Care and will be considered based on their individual curriculum, and experience and commitment to Hyperbaric Medicine.
